Set up in 2001, the .NAME generic TLD is the single TLD supposed to be for personal sites only. These domain names can be personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are famous by. At the beginning, just third-level registrations were permitted, so if you wanted to acquire john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already taken third-level names remained active.
